Can You Treat Peroneal Tendonitis with Compression Socks?

Treating peroneal tendonitis with compression socks

If the outside of your foot hurts and you have pain and discomfort in your ankle or lower leg, you could be suffering from peroneal tendonitis. Today we're taking a look at the symptoms, causes, and treatment of peroneal tendonitis. Let's get this taken care of so you can return to running pain free!

WHAT IS PERONEAL TENDONITIS?

The American Physical Therapy Foundation defines Peroneal Tendonitis as an overuse injury in which the peroneal tendons become strained and inflamed. Each leg has two peroneal tendons. These tendons connect to the peroneal muscles, which help stabilize and support both the ankle and foot. When the tendons become overused and irritated, they swell and can actually rub against the bone.

SYMPTOMS OF PERONEAL TENDONITIS

  • Pain near the back and/or outside of the ankle
  • Stiffness throughout the same region
  • Swelling and/or tenderness
  • Increased weakness in the foot
  • Pain when trying to turn the foot or ankle, increasingly so when trying to push off to walk or run

CAUSES OF PERONEAL TENDONITIS

Overuse is the main cause of tendonitis, and that is the case for peroneal tendonitis. It can also be caused by footwear that does not fit correctly, or footwear that does not offer adequate support. Improper form when training can also be a cause. One example would be a faulty gait when running. Another cause is trying to do too much training too soon, as the tendons are not used to this activity. Anatomically speaking, peroneal tendonitis could become a problem for people who have lower limb muscles issues or even runners who have high arches.

TREATMENT OF PERONEAL TENDONITIS

The good news is peroneal tendonitis is very treatable, even preventable in many situations. The bad news is people with tendonitis who continue to train with the injury are at a great risk of actually rupturing or tearing the tendons. That's when surgery becomes the main treatment, and no one should want that.

A doctor might diagnose peroneal tendonitis and prescribe a walking boot to help stabilize the injured area and decrease movement. They will also likely prescribe some type of anti-inflammatory meds like ibuprofen or something similar. Physical therapy is also certainly an option, and there you will be put through a series of exercises designed to strengthen the injured area.

You can alleviate the pain of peroneal tendonitis as well as prevent it by wearing compression socks or foot compression sleeves. Compression will help increase the blood flow in affected areas, a critical component for leg and foot injuries. This is because gravity will have its way and blood will pool in the lower limbs, especially if it's an injured area that is swollen. Run Forever Sports Compression Socks and Foot Sleeves will help move that blood out of the lower limbs and back toward the heart. This will help in decreasing pain and swelling.

But wearing compression socks or foot sleeves before you develop an injury is your best course of action. We are seeing this with pregnancy and compression socks. More and more pregnant women are choosing to wear compression socks because they are highly recommended by doctors and they help stave off problems like varicose veins and other maladies before they happen. The same is true for peroneal tendonitis and compression socks. Wearing them before you're injured will help prevent it from even happening.

Runners are incredibly strong-willed and they are driven to run through most injuries and pains. But that can have many deleterious effects on the body. Once something is injured it must be treated and it must be given a break to heal. Wearing compression socks or foot sleeves can help speed up that healing process.

Whether you have peroneal tendonitis and need to treat it or want to prevent it from ever happening, we recommend Run Forever Sports Compression Socks and/or Foot Compression Sleeves to help you get back to running free!
